Snoring is a major problem for millions of people throughout the world. Although it can be a significant social issue, there can also be other, related concerns that may arise from snoring. When snoring leads to sleep deprivation, for example, fatigue and lack of focus can be the result – not just for the person who snores, but for a partner, as well.

Some of the ways to stop snoring can involve a change of habits at bedtime. But it’s important to remember that each one of us is an individual and different methods will have varying degrees of results, depending on the person.

Since snoring involves the breathing passageways, elevating one’s head can help reduce snoring. This can be accomplished by sleeping on more than one pillow or by using a thicker pillow.

As far as that nightcap or warm glass of milk to help you sleep, this is not a good idea when it comes to snoring. Drinking alcoholic beverages (or taking sleeping pills, tranquilizers and other sleep-inducing medications) will only serve to relax your muscles, which can limit the air passageway and cause snoring. Milk (or other dairy products) can cause mucus to build up before you go to sleep.

If you’re overweight, you can also be contributing to snoring by the excess fat that can cause a reduction in your air passageway space. Losing weight can go a long way in alleviating this situation.

Here’s a simple one. If you tend to sleep on your back, then try sleeping on your side. This will also open up the air passageway that tends to collapse a bit when you’re on your back. One good method, to help you with this, is to sew a tennis ball to the back of your night shirt or pajama top. When you try to roll over on your back, during sleep, the immediate discomfort will assist you in keeping off your back.

A regular sleep routine can also be helpful, as well as sipping a bit of honey before bedtime. This should be done in place of eating a large meal before bed. A full stomach can push against your diaphragm and limit the space for your air passageway.

Moisturizing your passageway with a humidifier can also alleviate congestion and stop snoring. Smoking is also a major culprit when it comes to drying out passageways as well as causing inflammation and swelling. If you can’t quit smoking right away, then at least avoid smoking just before bedtime.
