Stop Snoring

Remedies That Can Help You Stop Snoring

For those who wish to stop snoring, the search for an effective remedy can be a long journey. For others, it may be as simple as trying an easy throat exercise. A stop snoring remedy can fall into one of two categories: short-term and long-term. Other designations might be prescriptive and preventative.

Long Term Remedies

This approach requires that you understand the root cause of snoring as opposed to just the symptoms of snoring. By treating just the symptoms, the real problem is masked and thus remains intact.

Since snoring is the result of an airway passage narrowing, we can identify this as a root cause. The partially obstructed airway generates the snoring sound. A more serious concern is when the airway becomes completely obstructed and thus temporarily cuts off breathing altogether. This is known as obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea requires immediate treatment by a physician. However, a doctor-provided stop snoring remedy that treats airway obstruction will also eliminate both snoring and sleep apnea.

When considering a long term stop snoring remedy, you may initially take a look at body weight. An overweight individual will build fat tissue along the throat and neck. Losing 10 pounds of excess body fat may be sufficient to stop snoring. If 10 pounds isn’t sufficient, then a doctor-supervised exercise and diet weight loss program may be in order.

For those who are not overweight, then using throat, facial and tongue exercises may alleviate the problem. These are exercises that are designed to strengthen the muscle tissues that will keep the airway from narrowing during sleep and thus eliminate snoring.

Finally, if none of this seems to work, you may wish to consult with a physician regarding the possibility of surgery as a permanent stop snoring remedy to correct air passageway problems.

Short Term Remedies

If you need immediate relief to your snoring problem, then a short term remedy can be effective. A short term stop snoring remedy can include making sure that you don’t do anything to allow your throat to narrow during sleep. This includes avoiding alcohol or any medications that will relax your muscles prior to going to bed.

Another short term remedy involves your sleeping position. Sleeping on your side instead of your back will keep your air passageways open. The same holds true for elevating your hear off the mattress using multiple or special pillows.

Finally, there are a quite a few devices (snoring strips, etc.), which can be used as a stop snoring remedy. These can be purchased from your local drugstore.

The short term remedies are only temporary solutions, however. To permanently address your snoring problem, you may need to consider a long term approach.
